Planning your site
Time to get your thinking cap on and plan out what you're going to have on your website.

Now is the time to start seriously thinking about what you're going to have on your home page.

You may think its a bit pretentious to start planning stuff out to any great level ... you may think "its only my home page", or "Its not that important".

But it is. Its essential to have a plan for everything you do.
Planning your site

Why plan?
A plan is useful for letting you keep track of where you've got to in your project. This is especially useful if you go a week or more without working on your pages - or if you have a terrible memory.

By planning out your site - and what you're going to have on each page you help firm up issues such as navigation. Good navigation is essential for allowing people to get at your pages - and by knowing the overall content of your site you can create a better navigation system.

You don't have to use pen and paper to plan either. You can use text files (or even html files) to keep your notes in. Some editors allow you to keep design notes with the pages.

Mind Map - Warning Need Pen and Paper for this!
If you're into using ordinary pen and paper then you'll enjoy this next exercise. If you've ever read any Tony Buzan books then you'll know whats coming next. Draw a shape in the middle of a piece of A4 - square, circle, ovoid, doesn't matter which. In it write the name of your planned web site. Then elsewhere on the paper draw another shape and write page 1 in it. Join up the title with the page 1 with a line. Now under page 1 write a list of things you want to put on that page. Continue for all the other pages.

When you've got something like this picture above you'll have completed the first stage of planning. All you try to do is get everything down on paper that you can think of, and in whatever order - it doesn't really matter at all. You can see from my quick sketch that pages are linked by lines... Once you start using this method for planning out sites you'll be surprised how much fun it can be - get a pack of felt tip pens and some nice paper and enjoy doing it.

Use a different colour pen to add more comments.... such as "do research", or name pages. That way you keep track of when you've changed your mind.
