Starting HTML?
Then you've come to the right place! This is the introduction to html and web pages.

This first section just involved some reading. You might like to print this page out and make a coffee and see on the sofa whilst you're reading it.
Absolute Beginners
It doesn't matter if you've never made a web page before - this site is aimed at complete beginners.

You don't need to be an expert at anything - you'll learn everything you need to know here. As long as you've got some basic experience of using a computer (you have - you're reading this) and of using the Internet - then you'll be fine.

We'll take you from being an absolute beginner to knowing as much as you want to know. You'll be free to chose how much you learn, and at what speed.

Before you start the course, make sure you've got some free time - when you won't be interupted. If you get stuck anywhere then let us know. Thats what we're here for.

Learning HTML is easy, creating simple web pages is easy, and you'll soon be making your first page!

Are you excited yet?

You should be! Learning html is the beginning of a huge adventure.

How can I make a web page?

Its very simple - and all you have to do is follow some simple instructions.

You've got everything you need already on your computer.

All you need to do is be gently shown how YOU can make a page. By following simple instructions you'll surprise yourself at just how easy it is.

What do I need?

A text editor - Notepad comes as part of windows, and is just a simple program which you type text into. You've probably used it, or wordpad. HTML is written in text - no magic program is needed - so its simple!

A browser - You're looking at this page in a browser so you've definately got one of those!

Spare time - Although its easy, you'll need some free time to actually sit down and try the examples in the tutorial. Trying out the examples is REALLY important!

Desire to learn - well, you're here! Thats a good start.

What you also need is a little determination. The tutorial on this site covers basic HTML. Once you understand a little about how html works then you're ready to try a html editor. All the basic ones do is cut down on the amount of typing you have to do, and allow you to concentrate on the content of the page.

What do you want on your web page?
A lot of people will want to learn html without having a specific idea in mind.
Thats perfectly ok. You'll find an idea or a project you want to do using html very soon.

Simple Suggestions for your first Site

Start Page
You could make yourself a start page - you know, the page your browser first shows when you start it up. Its probably set to your current ISP home page. But you could make a simple page with your favourite links on it. You wouldn't even need to upload this page - you can set the start page to be any page online or on your computer!

Photo page
You could set up a photo page to show off pictures of your new child/dog/car/holiday. You could send the address of the page (if you've uploaded it) to your friends and relatives across the world!

Share Knowledge
If you're an expert on a subject, then you've probably got huge amounts of info to share with people. So you could make a complete site about your specialist subject and publish it on the Internet - and allow other people to read and learn from you.

Make Money!
You could set up a site to earn money with your web site. You could either sell a product yourself, or set up a site which sells other people's products (becoming an affiliate). This type of site is complicated - but there's nothing to stop you learning how!

Multitude of reasons

There are many reasons why you should have a site. Actually uploading a site to the net, and seeing it work will give you confidence to go on and learn other things.

There are some people who think that personal home pages are a waste of time. I don't. I've had many many hours of fun reading personal home pages. If there were only huge companys on the web then it would be a very boring place indeed!

One great aspect of the Internet is the way that it doesn't matter whether you're rich or poor - anyone can have a web site.

You might want to learn html to enhance your job prospects. You might even want to publish your CV online.

Most people'e first home page consists of a page with a couple of pics on, with text saying "this is my dog". There's nothing wrong with that at all. Everyone has to start somewhere. Learning basic html will start you along the path to bigger things!
