Many people venturing onto the web for the first time refuse to have any links on their new site (especially true where they've paid money for someone to design the site for them) and if they do then the links open in a new window. This same group of people also get frantic about traffic and wonder why they don't have any. Lets look at a recent example I've seen - a website for some holiday cottages. I spent a good while looking over the site wondering where the cottages where - there was no mention of what area of the country they were in! Luckily a .co.uk domain name meant that they were in the UK. This site could have so easily been enhanced by using some location related keywords! So what links could a site about holiday cottages offer? Well - what would be really useful would be a list of attractions and places to visit within certain distances! The list could also include those places which don't have a web site (A quick trip out with a digital camera would provide photos - and voila! You instantly have more content on your site!) as well as those that do have web sites. Show people that they will have plenty of things to do if they stay at these holiday cottages. Put a reminder to bookmark easy click link on the page or use this really cool new branding/bookmarking technique. If you provide a useful resource for people planning a holiday then they are likely to return to the site to look again at the list of places to visit. With branding on the site they will link your cottages in their minds with the great holiday resource! Without this useful resource the holiday cottage site is just another site trying to sell something. When you link to other sites, you can ask them for a link in return. More links to your site will increase your ranking in the search engines. Make the link open in the same window. You can not trap people on your site forever - so don't try to. As long as your resource is worth using they will come back and use it. |
| In summary: Links are what makes the wwworld go round! Be part of it! Make something useful on your site for people to come back and use again! | ||
