Web traffic - a quick course on getting visitors to your site

Promoting your site

Promoting your site can be hard work. There are a number of ways both on and offline to promote your site.

Look at what the big players in the Internet World do. They use all forms of media for promoting. Radio, TV, billboards, magazines and newspapers are all used to get people used to and remembering URLs.

Obviously on a small budget it'd be impossible to afford any of these. But that doesn't mean you can't find alternative ways.

Non-Internet Advertising

Unless you've got heaps of money then its unlikely that you'll be able to afford a huge ad campaign.

There are a couple of things you can do to promote your site. One would be to include the URL on your letterhead, and or business card. If its a company website then include the URL on all your business publicity.

If you have vehicles then get the URL on the side!

Get a t-shirt made! Especially great if you go to trade shows!

If you're specialising in a particular topic which may be of great interest to the local area then you might try contacting your local radio station to see if they'd like to interview you about your site.

The local newspaper (often the free ones) look for stories all the time. If your site has a twist which makes it appealing then you'll be more likely to get interviewed and have the URL publicised. You could always offer to do a free weekly column answering questions on your special topic. You'll probably be able to think of other ways of getting Non-net publicity.

Advertising Online

Obviously the need to advertise online is enormous. There are many ways of promoting your site quite cheaply.

Do you subscribe to many e-zines? You probably do. Probably ones on topics you're interested in. Do you subscribe to any that are relevant to your site content?

Find out about advertising in a relevant e-zine. Its probably not as expensive as you think.

If you do advertise in e-zines you need to measure how succesful your advertising is. You could do this by refering people to a specific url and then counting the numbers of people arriving at that page and how much sales you do through that number.

Pay per Click Search Engines

The oldest of these is probably goto.com

Go now and look up your keywords and see whats been bid for them. It says what the cost is just under the description of the site.

Obviously paying per click is only feasible if you're going to make money off people coming in.

The serious merchants use pay per click engines - have a look at any relevant ones to your site and you might be able to find some relevant affiliate programs to join.

Give something away free!

One of the most searched for subjects on the Net is free stuff. Giving away a freebie can be great for your site! You'll get lots of traffic - especially if you contact various free sites to get them to add your URL.

Bear in mind that unless you limit the number of products you give away it might cost you a small fortune in postage(Unless its an e-product).

Giving something away like a mousemat with your URL on is definately one way of getting your URL known and remembered.

You could also make the giveaway a regular event - encouraging people to bookmark the site and return on a regular basis.

Competition Crazy

Rather than give away lots of smaller items you might want to get people to sign up for a mailing list and be entered into a prize draw for something big.

Although people are wary of giving away email addresses if you offer a good enough prize then you'll get lots of people signing up. You can in return send out regular mailings (make sure people have an opportunity to uinsubscribe) detailing offers on your site - or the latest news.
