How to get traffic to your site - analysising the search engines

Analysis of Search Engines

By getting a good listing in the search engines, and being in the top ten results for specific topics you stand a good chance of getting traffic through them. But traffic from search engines depends on how many people are searching for that particular phrase.

Search for your keywords on 7search.com Do it now. Click on the link and it opens in another window. This is your demand for the keyword.

Now click on Altavista and search for the same keyword (put it in ""). You need to see how many pages come up. This is the supply.

Now you need to make a chart: (information obtained 10/12/00)

KeywordBid to become #1Estimated Monthly SearchesPages Found on Altavista
1. christmas trees $0.02 24450,593
2. artificial christmas trees $0.02 32 2,957
3. aluminum christmas trees $0.02 17 42
4. FIBER OPTIC CHRISTMAS TREES $0.0113 2
5. decorating christmas trees $0.01 10 175
6. decorated christmas trees $0.01 7 650
7. balsam fir christmas trees $0.01 7 107

9. christmas trees in north carolina $0.01 4 17
10. fake christmas trees $0.01 4 75
11. christmas trees australia $0.01 3 0

There's some interesting information that can be gathered from using this approach. Firstly 7search.com has shown you other related keywords.

You can calculate a ratio of demand/supply.

KeywordRatio of Demand Supply
1. christmas trees0.0048
2. artificial christmas trees 0.0108
3. aluminum christmas trees 0.4047
4. FIBER OPTIC CHRISTMAS TREES 6.5
5. decorating christmas trees 0.0571
6. decorated christmas trees 0.0107
7. balsam fir christmas trees 0.0654
8. Noble fir christmas trees 0.4
9. christmas trees in north carolina 0.2352
10. fake christmas trees 0.0533
11. christmas trees australia 3*

* 3/0 is silly, so lets say 3/1,

Analysing Search Engine Keywords

We ended the previous page with a table showing the ratio of demand/supply. To put this in a better order, arrange the table with the highest ratios first.

KeywordRatio of Demand Supply
4. FIBER OPTIC CHRISTMAS TREES 6.5
11. christmas trees australia 3
3. aluminum christmas trees 0.4047
8. Noble fir christmas trees 0.4
9. christmas trees in north carolina 0.2352
7. balsam fir christmas trees 0.0654
5. decorating christmas trees 0.0571
10. fake christmas trees 0.0533
2. artificial christmas trees 0.0108
6. decorated christmas trees 0.0107
1. christmas trees0.0048

This would be really easy to do in a spreadsheet or database.
Lets look at the top ratio.

FIBER OPTIC CHRISTMAS TREES

1. Amazon.com: buying info: Traditional Christmas Cooking, Crafts & Gifts Craft BooksSelling books
2. Amazon.com: buying info: One-Hour Christmas Crafts (Clever Crafter Series) Christmas Cook BookSelling books

Remember we only found two pages about fiber optic christmas trees - so this keyword will be really quick to look at.
Both pages are books for sale on amazon - which gives you ideas about how to make money by writing about fiber optic trees.

Now, as the number of results is very low, we need to use your knowledge about the keyword to help find more information.

Firstly, we note the spelling of fiber, and replace it with fibre. It still only has two search results on Altavista, but this time....

FIBRE OPTIC CHRISTMAS TREES

1. Christmas Gifts--Christmas Trees Manufacturer Offer Artificial Christmas Trees Christmas tree manufacturerSelling xmas tress. Articles about xmas trees
2. 21st Nov '97 Advertisement page, news christmas tree news

We check on 7search.com and find 1 search result. Its useful to know that different spellings are often used, and that if you tailor your pages to what you find, you'll achieve better ratings, and get more traffic from search engines.

While we were playing with the spelling concept, we decided to look up xmas trees too. We found that there are 8 searches a month for xmas trees, and 1802 pages found for it. A low ratio, but worthwhile adding xmas trees to the keywords.

Results Analysis

Now we take our top link onto Goto.com and see what comes up.

We look at Goto.com as its a pay per click search engine - which means people pay to be included on it. This means that people want to make money from the sites they have advertised on Goto.com.

We can find some useful information from these top few sites.
The cost to advertiser is shown in brackets, and we note that the number one spot (Cost to advertiser: $0.03).

We look at the sites one by one (as many as you can stand, but not more than 10-20)

So from looking at these sites which come up on goto.com we can see what keywords they have, what content they provide, and what products they sell. If we see an affiliate program which suits us, then thats great. Make a note of the url to sign up with.

As you can see, we're learning about what types of content we could use on our site, and what products can be tied in.

The keywords used on these sites can be fed back into 7search.com and more results produced. How far you want to go with this process is up to you, but hopefully you'll find it interesting enough to spend some time on.
Don't spend forever though!

Once you have good keywords and good ideas for content, you'll be able to fit it all together and make a cracking website which will get good traffic from the search engines - because you'll have sorted out the best keywords people search for and made highly relevant and specific content pages.
